Player Focus: Kan Mo

The Angkor Warrior from South Africa

Mohammed Faeez Khan, known throughout Cambodia as Kan Mo, represents a unique and compelling figure in modern Southeast Asian football. Born in South Africa, the versatile defender has transcended the role of a foreign professional to become a fully integrated and celebrated Cambodian citizen, captaining both his club, Visakha FC, and his adopted nation. On the pitch, he is a commanding presence—a defensive anchor with a rare and remarkable goal-scoring prowess that sets him apart. A pivotal member of the Visakha squad that secured three consecutive Hun Sen Cup titles, Kan Mo’s journey from the South African leagues to the heart of Cambodian football embodies a story of personal transformation, professional success, and the increasing globalization of the sport.

The Story So Far

Born on September 24, 1992, in East London, South Africa, Mohammed Faeez Khan’s footballing education began in the youth academy of Free State Stars. He transitioned to the senior professional ranks in July 2015, signing with Milano United in the National First Division, where he made 40 league appearances. A move to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila followed in 2017.

In 2019, Khan made a life-altering career shift to Southeast Asia, first joining Phatthalung FC in Thai League 4 before moving to Cambodia to play for Tiffy Army FC. This period was crucial for his acclimatization to the region’s football, setting the stage for the next major chapter.

That chapter began on April 29, 2020, when he signed for Visakha FC. He quickly established himself as a vital part of the team’s defence, wearing the number 4 jersey. His influence and leadership were formally recognized when he was appointed club captain ahead of the 2023–24 season. With Visakha, he became central to a period of significant domestic success, most notably winning three consecutive Hun Sen Cups in 2020, 2021, and 2022.

However, his most profound transformation was personal. After five years of living and playing in the country, Khan officially received Cambodian citizenship through naturalization on August 6, 2024. He described the decision as being rooted in “a combination of love, loyalty and gratitude,” stating that the country had ceased to feel foreign and had become “home.”

As part of his integration, he adopted the Khmer name Kan Mo, suggested by a staff member assisting with his citizenship. His immediate acceptance of the name, stating it “felt right,” underscored his wholehearted embrace of his new national identity. “Cambodia has completely changed my life, not just in football, but in who I am as a person,” he has stated, crediting his time in the country with teaching him patience, humility, and the importance of community.

This new identity culminated in an international career. Kan Mo made his debut for the Cambodia national team on September 5, 2024. His leadership was immediately recognized at the international level when he was given the captain’s armband for a friendly match against Hong Kong on October 15, 2024—a significant honor for a newly naturalized player and a powerful symbol of his complete integration into the fabric of Cambodian football.

Style of Play & Tactical Analysis

Kan Mo’s on-field profile is that of a modern, versatile, and intelligent defender who combines traditional defensive duties with a significant and unusual attacking contribution.

His primary position is centre-back, where he operates as the anchor for both Visakha and Cambodia. Right-footed and comfortable building play from the back, his tactical value is significantly enhanced by his versatility. He is proficient at playing as a right-back and has also been listed as capable of operating as a defensive midfielder, offering his coaches multiple options for team structure.

Kan Mo’s most defining intangible quality is his leadership. His captaincy of both a top-tier club and, on occasion, the national team speaks volumes about the trust and respect he commands.

His most remarkable attribute, however, is his exceptional goal return for a defender. As of October 2025, he had scored 11 goals in 68 league appearances for Visakha. During one stretch of the 2024-25 season, he was noted as the league’s highest-scoring defender. This threat is not a fluke; it’s a consistent weapon. His record is supported by key performances, including a two-goal brace against ISI Dangkor Senchey and the decisive winning goal in a crucial 1-0 victory over rivals Svay Rieng.

This goal-scoring record is built on his outstanding aerial prowess. He is a primary target on set-pieces, exemplified in a derby win over Phnom Penh Crown where he scored the winning goal with a powerful header from a corner kick. This ability to dominate at both ends of the pitch was perfectly captured in a 2-0 victory over Tiffy Army, where he was named Man of the Match after a performance that included scoring the opening goal.

Future Outlook

Even as an active player and captain, Kan Mo is already laying the groundwork for a future dedicated to giving back to Cambodian football. As a certified fitness coach, he has started mentoring young Cambodian athletes and has expressed a strong desire to support youth development and establish new fitness programs.

His on-field leadership is clearly matched by an off-field commitment to community and mentorship. This positions him as a central and influential character in the ongoing story of Cambodian football’s development, poised to remain a role model for the next generation of players—both local and foreign-born—long after his playing career concludes.
