The Story So Far

Hsu Yi-yun’s football journey began in Taoyuan City. Unlike many international stars who grow up in professional academies, Hsu developed her skills through Taiwan’s school and university system. Standing at 161 cm, she relied on a low center of gravity and excellent ball control rather than size to dominate the pitch. Her leadership qualities first shone at Fu Jen Catholic University, where she captained her side to their first-ever championship final in 2019, famously ending a long winning streak by the dominant National Taiwan Normal University.

While excelling on the field, Hsu was also a dedicated student, researching how hydration affects performance at the Institute of Physiology. This knowledge gives her a unique edge in the hot and humid conditions of Asian football, allowing her to keep her energy up when other players begin to tire. This science-backed stamina was clear when she scored an 88th-minute goal against Indonesia in late 2025.

In late 2019, Hsu made a brave move to Europe to join VC Moldavo in the Belgian First Division. The faster and more physical style of play in Belgium helped her grow, teaching her to scan the field more quickly and handle tough physical challenges. When she returned to Taiwan in 2020, she joined Hualien and immediately helped them to an unbeaten season and a league title.

Hsu’s career hit a new peak in 2022 when she led Hualien back to the championship. In the season opener, she stunned fans with a goal from over 25 yards out and then scored again minutes later by pressing the goalkeeper, showing her aggressive European influence. In 2023, she made history by becoming the first female player to sign a professional contract with AC Taipei. This move was the cornerstone of the Future Project to create a professional club environment in Taiwan.

Style of Play & Tactical Analysis

Hsu has evolved from a creative number 10 into a disciplined deep-lying playmaker. When her team is attacking, she drops back to collect the ball from the defenders and dictates the tempo with her passing. She is well-known for her long diagonal balls that stretch the opposition’s defense. Defensively, she acts as a shield for her team, using her ability to read the game to cut out passes before they become dangerous.

Her most famous trait is the World Wave—a powerful long-range shot that she can unleash from 30 yards out. This threat forces opposing defenders to come out and mark her, which creates gaps for her teammates to run into. Her ability to win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately turn it into a goal-scoring chance is a repeatable pattern in her game.

Future Outlook

As the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup approaches, Hsu remains the most important player for the Blue Magpies. With the national team currently bringing in many younger players, her role has grown into that of a mentor and on-field leader. At AC Taipei, she continues to lead the squad as they try to break the dominance of the league’s traditional big teams.
