Hun Sen Cup Hub: Countdown to 2026

The Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen Cup—commonly known as the Hun Sen Cup—is Cambodia’s premier knockout competition and a cornerstone of the nation’s footballing identity. Established in 2007 as a vehicle for national reconciliation, the tournament has evolved into a sophisticated, multi-tiered ecosystem that serves as the definitive bridge between the professional industry of Phnom Penh and the deep-rooted passion of the provinces. It features a unique dual-stage format, beginning with a Provincial Stage for grassroots teams before culminating in a high-stakes National Stage where professional Cambodian Premier League (CPL) clubs enter the fray.

As the counterpart to the CPL, the Hun Sen Cup carries immense prestige, functioning similarly to England’s FA Cup but with a distinct developmental mandate to unearth raw talent from across the Kingdom. For the clubs involved, the stakes are not merely domestic; the winner now earns a direct golden ticket to the AFC Challenge League, providing a vital pathway to continental glory. Whether it is the professional super clubs vying for a spot on the Asian stage or provincial underdogs seeking to shatter the glass ceiling, the Hun Sen Cup remains the most accurate reflection of the growth, resilience, and ambition of modern Cambodian football.

2024-25 Edition Review

The 18th edition of the Hun Sen Cup concluded in spectacular fashion on May 25, 2025, with a final that will be remembered as a landmark moment for Phnom Penh Crown. Facing their arch-rivals and five-time champions Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng at a packed Morodok Techo National Stadium, the “Red Singha” finally shattered a 16-year “Cup Curse” with a hard-fought 2-1 victory. The atmosphere was electric, serving as a fitting farewell for Svay Rieng’s Spanish head coach, Pep Muñoz, in his final match leading the “Blue Swords”.

The path to the final saw the Kingdom’s “Big Four” assert their dominance during the National Stage. In the semi-finals, Svay Rieng overcame Boeung Ket, while Phnom Penh Crown edged past Visakha FC in a high-tension two-legged encounter. Boeung Ket eventually secured a third-place finish with a convincing 3-0 win over Visakha, led by the prolific Sieng Chanthea, who finished as the tournament’s joint top scorer with 6 goals—sharing the Golden Boot with Svay Rieng legend Prak Mony Udom.

The final itself was a tactical masterclass that ignited when Crown’s Long Phearath unleashed a stunning long-range strike to take the lead before halftime. Svay Rieng responded with characteristic resilience early in the second half through an equalizer from Nhean Sosidan, setting the stage for a frantic finale. In the 78th minute, naturalized striker Rafael Nieto became the hero for the Red Singha, calmly slotting home the winner to secure Crown’s third title and cement their return to the summit of Cambodian knockout football.
